GULLIVER THE VW KOMBI CAMPER

GULLIVER THE VW CAMPER

A 1973 VW poptop built from new by Sopru who were the officially approved Volkswagen converters for Australia. Their factory was at Blair Athol South Australia.

Gulliver is ideal for touring and camping with seat/bed and upper bunk for two

We will be refurbishing where necessary and there will be new paint etc.

Furniture & cupboards will be refurbished with some new pieces but similar to original Sopru fittings for which we have have templates

Gulliver will have white top to swage line and original colour though we are tempted to change slightly to Citrus Red. Another colour that will also suit is Monza Red -Code 8005 -with Avario Ivory -Code 8146- top. These are Alfa Romeo colours.

We do play with Selecta Bus occasionally and look at other colours.

Will update progressively.

First will be complete clean and then a full service and mechanical check including replacement of fuel lines.

Gulliver is being fitted with an 1800cc engine. This was originally a 1700cc but rebuilt to 1800 and has done approx 1500ks.

UPDATE : 25th July.

Engine in and runs really well- carbs only needed minor adjustments . The transmission is very smooth with the gear shifts the best I have driven for many many years. More cleaning today and we did "dummy run" with cupboards, sink, bed, fridge layout and think we have achieved what we want. All out again to be assembled, painted, where necessary and some more "bits" to make.

Paint shop can't fit us in for a month at least so we will get on with interior.

New 29th March 2009-

Time has flown and we let our grandson's first Kombi take our "slot" at paintshop and since then we have put our time into completing its fitout.

We have started on Gulliver again with interior and booked into paintshop approx mid April.

Slight change in colour with our preference being a pastel grey from Mercedes Benz above swage line with Kalahari Tan (original) below. This will be different but we feel very attractive. All body work has been done with "shopping trolley" and parking dents removed as well as any minor rust.

Now in prime and colour due to go on this week -June 2nd.
